Early Childhood Quality Evaluators

Our Early Childhood Quality Evaluators use the Environmental Rating Scales (ERS) to assess early childhood programs across the state. The Environmental Rating Scales (ERS) are research-based tools used to assess the quality in child care centers, family child care facilities and homes, and out of school time programs.   These tools look at teacher engagement, spaces and equipment used by children, play materials, and children’s activities. Each assessment takes three hours to complete. It is scored on a scale of 1-7. The scale considers:

  • Space and furnishings

  • Personal care routines

  • Language and books

  • Activities

  • Interaction

  • Program structure

This project currently uses ITERS-3, ECERS-3, FCCERS-3 and SACCERS-U. For more information on the Environmental Ratings Scales, please visit https://www.ersi.info/.
